One of the Cooks shipped from Macao in the French Ships "Nouvelle Penelope" and who were reported was one of the Chiefs of the revolt & an accomplice in the outrage committed on board that ship was arrested at Hongkong, & his extradition was demanded by the Auths of Canton.
Having been indicted as guilty of piracy within the jurisdiction of that English Colony, he appealed to the Superior Court, & after prolonged discussion his extradition was suspended by Judge Sir Hale, subject to the decision of the English Govt.
The Attorney ... to the Crown protested against the respective sentence.
As may be seen, the British Judge suspended the extradition of the Cook on the ground that the Coolies at Macao were forced to embark; that they were not cognizant of the act they committed; that...
